Young, unmarried Waiwai men played flutes for enjoyment. Men also played flutes during ceremonies and festivities. They carried them when travelling as it was customary to play flutes when entering villages.

Various Amazonian groups carved the long bones of animals such as the jaguar, tapir and deer into flutes. Those made of jaguar bone were the most prized.
