In many South American myths the turtle is a clever trickster. It outsmarted its enemy the jaguar, or beat the deer at a race. Its cunning is matched by its strength, longevity and fertility.

Turtle shells are used in various ways. The Tukano (Northwest Brazil) use them as musical instruments, while the De’áruwa (Southwest Venezuela) make ornaments out of them.
