Body art

Many Amazonian peoples paint their bodies in complex, geometric designs, ‘wrapping’ themselves in protective patterns for important occasions. The designs reflect cultural ties, status, age and sex.

The Shipibo-Conibo (northeastern Peru) believe the universe is filled with patterns moving through space to cover objects and bodies. Body painting is one expression of this belief.
