The Arctic
|
Many different cultures, with their own traditions, languages and beliefs
live in the Arctic, including the:
-
Unangan (Aleut) and Yup’ik of southwestern Alaska
- Inupiat of
northern Alaska
- Inuit of the Canadian Arctic
-
Kalaallit of Kalaallit Nunaat (Greenland)
Arctic peoples have adapted superbly to their icy environment using materials
such as animal skin, fur, ivory and intestine. Today they use snowmobiles, guns
and store-bought clothing as well as more traditional sleds, kayaks and
caribou clothing.
People have lived in the Arctic for thousands of years. Contact with Europeans
had started by AD 1000. By the mid-1700s, the Russians had set up
alliances with Alaskan groups to trade sea otter pelts. Later, the arrival of
whalers, explorers and missionaries had dramatic impact on local cultures.
