Mesoamerican screenfolds: annals and dream books

All the surviving screenfold books fall into two categories - annals and dream books.

The annals – xiuhtlapoualli – tell stories that may stretch over many centuries, often promoting the interests of particular families or polities (organised societies).

The dream books – temicamatl – are a condensed or ritualised version of reality which deal with fundamental human experiences. Fejérváry-Mayer is a dream book.

The scribes who wrote these books – tlacuilo in Nahuatl or Aztec – were trained in special schools.
