King Mindon and King Thibaw of Burma: gifts and plunder

White, carved chair

19th century carved ivory chair

Mindon was a peace loving king (reigned 1853-78) who wanted good relations with the Europeans.

Mindon's successor, Thibaw (reigned 1878-1885) was unpopular with his people. The British used this as an excuse to invade the country. They took control of trade in the region.

This 19th century carved ivory chair was taken from his palace during the British attack in 1885.
