This is a maroon lacquer writing desk or 'Bonheur-du-jour'. It would have been used in a lady's drawing room or bedroom. It is probably made in Canton (Guangzhou), south China in mid-19th century. A bonheur-du-jour usually consists of

  • a top section with cabinet doors and divided interior
  • a table bottom and a desk placed on the table in front of the cabinet

It would have been placed in a drawing room or bedroom to store personal ornaments, a watch and sewing implements.
