The Japanese sword: soul of the Samurai

Swords hold an important place in Japanese history and culture. They bring together great technical skill and artistic excellence. Swords once used by famous warrior heroes are regarded as national treasures and symbols of Japan's history.

The steel in the blade is of two strengths:

  • very hard steel at the edge to be sharpened for cutting
  • softer steel in the body to absorb the shock of a blow

The difference becomes clear after the blade has been properly polished.
