Crown of five Buddhas on painted linen chodpan
Tibet, 19th century
Accession Number 53.87.169
Each of the panels shows one of the five Celestial Buddhas - Amitabha, Vairochana, Akshobhya, Ratnasambhava and Amoghasiddhi - seated on a lotus throne.
During some religious ceremonies the monks wear the costumes and crowns of the five Celestial Buddhas. Through meditation, the monks will then take on the divine nature and qualities of the five Buddhas.
The crowns are made of silver-gilt or cloth and divided into five panels, each painted with one of the five Celestial Buddhas.
