Decorating barkcloth
The cloth can be left plain white, or decorated using various techniques.
These include:
- rubbing with a dye-soaked cloth over a block of wood with a raised
design on it
- freehand painting
- printing with rollers or stamps
- using stencils
Several different techniques can be used on the same piece of cloth.

Barkcloth ‘siapo’ from Samoa or Tonga
This piece of barkcloth was decorated by rubbing a dye-soaked cloth over it on a pattern block (the light brown sections), then hand painted.

Barkcloth ‘masi’ from Fiji
This barkcloth was decorated using stencils and freehand painting.
