‘Malagans’
today
‘Malagan’ sculptures are still made today.
Edward and Matthew Salle are master craftsmen on the Tabar Islands. You
can see some of their work on the gallery when you visit the museum
Edward Salle made three of the sculptures on display in the gallery for
other people - the owners of the images. The owners hold copyright
(kopy rait) of the images, even after the sculptures
are destroyed or sold.
Edward owns ‘malagan’ images himself, inherited from his mother's and father's clans. Here you can see his ‘Vivil Simara’ figure which is on display in the gallery.
