All of the objects in this section are associated with exchange.

The people of New Guinea exchange food, manufactured goods, shell money and shell ornaments. This can be as payment, barter, trade, gifts or as part of special ceremonies.

Having a lot of exchange partners, or impressing other people with your exchange valuables, are the main ways a man or woman can become important. Men aim to become 'big men', and women 'big women' through different kinds of exchange activities.

People have been exchanging goods in this way for many years. Trade in pearl shells in the Highlands is over 10,000 years old. In some areas of New Guinea, shell money is still used alongside modern paper money and coins.
