The ancestors of Maori people first arrived in New Zealand / Aotearoa over 1000 years ago. Captain Cook arrived in 1769. Aotearoa is the name given to New Zealand by Maori. Today, Maori make up 9% of the population. Most live in towns, but have strong ties to their rural origins. Maori is an official language and is widely spoken.
