Adze from the Cook Islands

Cook Islands carvers made ceremonial adzes (originally a type of woodworking tool) for religious reasons before European contact. After Christian missionaries arrived, Europeans started collecting them and they were made just for trade. This one was probably made in the mid 19^th century.
