Specialist interests:

I currently have two main areas of interest.

The first focuses on the ‘Frontier Cadre’ a group of colonial officers stationed in the Himalayas on the edge of empire in the early 20th century, I am particularly interested in using our collections to highlight the complex and often untold relationships between the frontier colonialists and Tibetans.

I also have a long held interest in Indian rural arts and crafts due to several visits to South Asia. Most recently I have travelled to Chattisgarh state in central India to commission work from renowned sculptor Sonabai Rajawar.

Current research projects

I’m currently selecting objects from the Chinese collection for display in the new Museum of Liverpool, which is due to open in 2010/11.

I’m also preparing to undertake a major study on Sir Charles Bell, an important government official who worked in the Himalayas in the early 20th century. Using our Charles Bell collection my research will focus on his approach to object collecting and his friendships with Tibetans, particularly the 13th Dalai Lama, uncovering the subtle, personal histories of a colonial collection and its collector.

Additionally I’m working in partnership with The Earth and Grass Workshop, a craft development organisation based in New Delhi, India, to commission and acquire contemporary Indian arts and crafts for our permanent collection.
