Specialist interests:
As a freshwater biologist Ian is involved in surveying freshwater sites as part of the Entomology Section. He is also interested in moths.
Ian has a particular knowledge of Caddis, a small group of insects that have aquatic larvae; there are 198 British and Irish Species. Currently he is organiser of the National Caddis Distribution Study Scheme, run under the auspices of the Biological Records Centre and National
Biodiversity Network. The aim is for electronic and paper copies of distribution maps in the next few years. He also writes identification keys for caddis larvae.
Popularising natural history has been a driving force throughout his career. Currently he is finalising a Simple Key to Caddis Larvae.

Production of Simple Identification Key to Caddis Larvae.
Production of distribution maps with accompanying comments for all British Caddis species.
Distributional studies on the endemic North Wales race of the Sandhill Rustic Moth.
