The Egyptology displays at World Museum Liverpool are closed until the new Ancient Egypt gallery opens on Friday 5 December 2008. The temporary Egyptology display that was in the Lower Horse Shoe gallery is also now closed.
Several galleries from the Ancient World are also now closed to allow vital access to the Ancient Egypt gallery for its refurbishment.
Visitors can still handle Ancient Egyptian objects in the Weston Discovery Centre at World Museum Liverpool and also in the Reveal gallery at National Conservation Centre.

World Museum Liverpool is in Liverpool city centre, close to the entrance to the Queensway Tunnel and Lime Street Station. You may want to use AA Route Planner to plan your journey.
World Museum Liverpool is a short walk from Liverpool Lime Street station - Liverpool's
mainline train station. Simply leave the concourse via the exit closest to the ticket
office (this route is also suitable for those requiring level access) . You come
out on Lord Nelson Street, facing the side of the Empire Theatre. Turn left out
onto Lime Street (St George's Hall is opposite). Go right along Lime Street, past
the Empire Theatre. Cross Lime Street at the pedestrian crossing near the theatre
(going towards the fountain), and walk down William Brown Street. The museum is
along on the right.
The nearest local line train station is Lime Street lower level. This is only served
by Wirral Line trains.
Moorfields station, just off Dale Street is a 5-10 min walk away. This station is
served by the Southport-Hunts Cross, Ormskirk, Kirkby, West Kirby, New Brighton,
Chester and Ellesmere Port line trains. Leave the station by the Moorfields entrance,
coming out onto Dale Street. Go left along Dale Street, passing under a flyover,
over a main road and onto William Brown Street. The museum entrance is along on
the left.
Liverpool Central is served by the same services as Moorfields. Leave the station by the main entrance, coming out onto Ranelagh Street. Go right, past McDonalds and then left onto Lime Street. Go along Lime Street, passing the main railway station and St George's Hall (large neo-classical building) until you reach a fountain at the top of William Brown Street. Walk down William Brown Street - the museum is at the foot of the hill on the right. .
World Museum Liverpool is within walking distance of the bus stations at Queen Square
and the Paradise Street Interchange.
From Queen Square: keep the Queen Square Centre and The Royal Court
Theatre on your right and walk towards St George's Hall and the adjoining gardens.
Cross at the pedestrian lights, turn left and walk through the gardens, keeping
the back of St George's Hall to your right. As you leave the gardens you will see
the museum entrance just across William Brown Street.
From Paradise Street: leave the bus station by the eastern exit (the end furthest from the river and the Albert Dock) and before you reach the traffic lights go left through a pedestrianised shopping area (by John Lewis). Pass several shops, cross the junction with Lord/Church Street and progress along Whitechapel. Take the pavement on the right side of the road, passing a taxi rank, bus station and several pubs. Cross the road towards St Johns Gardens, and keeping the gardens on your right follow the path round to the right to reach the museum.
The National Express coach station at Norton Street is within walking distance of the museum. Go right out of the coach station and onto London Road. Go right, down London Road, cross over at the traffic lights towards the fountain on the corner of William Brown Street. Walk down William Brown Street - the museum is at the foot of the hill on the right.

There is pay and display parking outside the museum on William Brown Street. There are also a limited number of blue badge spaces.
There is a small pay and display car park on Hunter Street, behind the museum and beneath the flyover. The nearest other car park is at Queen Square.
William Brown Street is designated a drop off and pick up point for coaches, with a maximum stay of 15 minutes. Group bookers travelling by coach can visit the Liverpool Travel Trade website for more information on suitable long stay coach parks.
Admission to World Museum Liverpool and all the National Museums Liverpool venues is FREE.
There is a cloak room near the main entrance where you can leave bags and prams. We ask that visitors avoid bringing large bags into the museum.
Floor plans for the museum are available at the information desk on the ground floor, and on the street level of all floors. We also have plans inside all lifts, and on the walls of each street level. We also have electronic information points on every street level.
There are two shops in the ground floor of the museum; one is a fair trade shop - the first in a UK museum. It sells a wide range of books, jewellery, crafts, food and gift ideas from around the world. There is also a toy shop selling a full range of souvenirs, toys and books for younger visitors.
World Museum Liverpool stands opposite St Johns Gardens and there is ample room for a picnic on a nice day. Please dispose of rubbish responsibly. There is also a picnic room on level 4. The Learning Base (ground floor) is also used during busy periods.
Feel free to bring your mp3 player or mobile phone with you but please turn phones to 'vibrate only' and please consider other visitors when adjusting your volume levels. Please switch your phone off during a planetarium or Treasure House Theatre performance.
The Community Base on Level 4 can be used as a prayer room if requested - please at the information desk.
Visitors can arrange appointments with curators via the information desk. The Weston Discovery Centre holds opinion services on the first Wednesday of every month from 2pm-4pm. These are drop-in sessions and cover archaeology, ethnology and decorative arts. The assistant curator of Decorative Art and the archaeological finds liaison officer for the North West will be available to give opinions on anything from ceramics, jewellery, silver and other metals, local history, archaeology, antiquities, coins, ethnographic material and antiques. Although valuations cannot be given, you may be able to find out where something is from, its age or what it's made of.
Each science collection area is supported by a working library. Their contents range from reference books and current journals to specialist collections of reprints and historic libraries of cognate societies. Books are publicly accessible by appointment only. Visitors can use the free wi-fi connection at World Museum Liverpool. Go to the fair trade shop on the ground floor where you will be given a voucher with an access code.
The top floor café, with views across the city, offers a selection of hot
and cold meals, snacks, cakes and beverages. It is open 11am-4.30pm. Last hot food
orders are taken at 3.30pm. The atrium coffee shop on the ground floor also sells
light refreshments including pastries, cakes, snacks and beverages and is open 10am-4.30pm.

Non-commercial photography is permitted everywhere except the planetarium, but neither
flash nor tripods can be used.

There are baby changing facilities on levels 1, 3 and 4.
Prams can be stored in the cloakroom near the main entrance. Please ask a member
of staff for assistance.
There is a children's selection available in both cafes (see the sample menues in
the 'useful downloads' section of this page). Cafe staff
are happy to warm bottles. There are highchairs available on request.
World Museum Liverpool over looks St Johns Gardens, so there is plenty of space for running around and a picnic. There is also a picnic room on level 4 of the museum. The Learning Base (ground floor) is also used during busy periods.
There is a shop near the main entrance which sells pocket money gifts specially for children.
The Clore Natural History Centre and Weston Discovery Centre (with gallery trails to download) provide lots of hands-on activities, ideal for children. Children also particularly enjoy the Bug House and the aquarium, and planetarium and Treasure House Theatre shows. Check the what's on section of this website for performance details.
We ask that visitors supervise their children at all times.
There are a limited number of blue badge parking spaces on William Brown Street, outside the museum. The road surface is cobbled.
The main entrance is flat and there are automatic doors.
Assistance dogs are welcome.
Wheelchairs are available to borrow from the cloakroom at the main entrance.
There are wheelchair accessible toilets on each floor except the ground floor.
There are cafes on both the ground floors and the top floor. Neither tables nor chairs are fixed to the floor. Waitress service is available. There are large print menus.
Documents can be requested in large print.

There are lifts between the floors. We have two access lifts (to the Treasure House Theatre and the Planetarium - ask staff for help), and ramps on the 3rd and 5th floors (to the top floor cafe and the Egypt gallery). All other areas have flat access.
The information points, located just off the main stairwell on each floor, are at a height suitable for wheelchair users and are touch screen.
All gallery interactives throughout the museum are touch screen with the exception
of the computers in the Discovery Centre and Clore Natural History Centre which
are operated via keyboard and mouse.
The large video screen on the wall at the end of the gallery does not have an induction loop or subtitles.
There are five computer-based interactives in the Time & Space gallery. All are at a height suitable for wheelchair users, have removable stools, subtitles and induction loops.
The planetarium is wheelchair accessible, has an induction loop and a paper version of the presentation is available either at the venue or by downloading a copy from the planetarium section of this website. Show times are featured in our what's on section.

The Community Base: has an induction loop
World Cultures Gallery: the introductory video as you enter the
gallery has subtitles and an audio loop. Five on-gallery computers have removable
stools, subtitles, audio loops and are wheelchair accessible.
Ancient Egypt Gallery (opens Friday 5 December 2008): All parts of the gallery are accessible to wheelchairs. All flooring in the gallery is flat, with no ramps and there are adequate spaces between the display cases for wheelchair access. The display cases and touch screen units used in the gallery are all at a low level.
The alcove of the 'Old Kingdom tomb chapel', located through a large archway in the 'Living in Ancient Egypt' section, is darker than the rest of the gallery. There are audio-visual features showing videos, which include subtitles. There are two gallery interactives both of which use a large, clear font. They are navigated using a touch screen facility.
The interactives are at a low level, however there is no space under the screen for wheelchairs to fit under them, face on. There is no seating in front of the interactives or in the rest of the gallery, but there is seating nearby in the adjacent gallery.
Discovery Centre: three computers of which two have sound and audio
loops and one of these also has subtitles. The third machine does not have narrative
or an audio loop. There are lots of hands-on activities in this area and visitors
are welcome to touch many of the objects.

There are two silent computers with web cams. Both have removable stools and are
at a height suitable for wheelchair users.
Clore Natural History Centre: three computers, none of which have
sound. Several exhibits have Braille labels. There are lots of hands-on activities
in this area and visitors are welcome to touch many of the objects.
