The 12th on a Scottish Moor

Information

'The Twelfth' referred to in the title is likely to be the 12th August, which marks the beginning of the red grouse shooting season in Scotland. This drawing may have been made in anticipation of it being published as an illustration in the Liverpool Autumn Exhibition catalogue for 1894. Adam exhibited a painting there that year called 'The Twelfth - On the Moor - A Startled Herd' (cat. no. 257.) No illustration by Adam appears in the catalogue though. The drawing was purchased in 1969 from a descendent of W. Wolfenden, a Liverpool-based blockmaker who produced the Liverpool Autumn Exhibition catalogues at the time. It is likely that Adam supplied this drawing to the blockmaker but that it was not included in the final publication.
