1997 European Year Against Racism

This t-shirt was produced for the 1997 European Year against Racism by the Liverpool Anti-Racist and Community Arts Association (LARCAA). The organisation was established to combat racism, promote Black arts and give a platform for Black artists. LARCAA delivered a broad variety of arts and campaigning activities ranging from grass roots projects through to regional initiatives and national campaigns. The image on the front of the t-shirt is a detail from the Cunard Building on the Liverpool Waterfront showing a man of African descent. The quote above the image is that of a well known African proverb – ‘Until the lions have their historians, tales of hunting will always glorify the hunter’ Below the image is a line from the poem, Still I Rise by celebrated Black poet, Maya Angelou - “Up from a past that is rooted in pain, I rise”. The back of the t-shirt is printed with quotes by Nelson Mandela and Malcolm X as well as quotes from the Bible and the Koran.
