Benett was a landscape painter and the youngest child of William Benett, a Master in the High Court and collateral descendent of Sir Isaac Newton. He had a great admiration for the natural landscape and viewed his paintings as a way of recording an England that was disappearing. The painting was presented by the artist's sister, Miss Sarah Benett.
