Crompton trained under British artists John Finnie (1829-1907) and William Daniels (1813-1880) at the Liverpool Academy, and later at the Heatherley School of Fine Art in London. He moved to London around 1881 where he exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1898 and 1912 and was elected a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours in 1898. He also regularly exhibited at Liverpool Autumn Exhibition's between 1875 and 1913.
