Sir Frank Brangwyn studied at the South Kensington Schools, London. He worked with the designer, William Morris and travelled extensively. Many of his compositions illustrated foreign subjects. In Continental countries, he was considered to be the most important of all British artists. He covered huge surfaces with rich decoration which resembled luxurious and theatrical stage constructions. This practice was comparable to continental ideas, rather than the more subtle genre of English painting during this time.

During the First World War, Brangwyn was an offiical war artist. He mainly produced propoganda posters. This sketch however shows that he was also depicting the realities of life in the War.
