Information

An adze or axe blade in grey stone with paler crystals. The outline is asymmetrical and the cross-section rounded rectangular. The butt is undifferentiated. The poll is oblique, and its surface bruised, the other surfaces are ground. There are two bevels, one on each side, and they are equal in size and convex. There are no chin lines. The cutting edge is curved. Both profiles are convex. The cutting edge is blunt and chipped. The sides are scratched. There are four grooves with four white ink crosses and a label on one face. The label reads: 'The notches indicated by a white mark thus x were made with a file for the purpose of securing the [indistinct] by the person entrusted to mount the specimen. Feb 1870. Jos B Hooker'
