'Africa Oye! '92'

MOL.2014.92.15

Information

This programme is from the very first Africa Oye Music Festival held 11 – 14 June,1992. Now one of the UK’s largest free celebration of African music and culture held annually in Sefton Park, it began as a series of small gigs in the city centre, including Hardman House Hotel and Bluecoat Chambers. Singers and musicians from Kenya, Zimbabwe, Brazil, Trinidad and Bolivia brought the best of African, Latin and Caribbean music to the heart of the city. The programme proudly explains the ethos of the festival, ‘Africa Oye! comes from a spirit of resistance. Making each one of us, despite our circumstances, want to sing and dance in sheer enjoyment of ourselves as free and dignified human beings’. Today that firmly remains true, as an international event that harnesses the spirit of multiculturalism and tolerance.
