This is one of a group of drawings by British artist and book illustrator Edward Francis Burney, depicting scenes from Greek and Roman history and mythology. In Greek mythology, the Amazons were a group of female warriors. They lived in a single-sex community and did not associate with men other than to bear children, raising the daughters and abandoning the sons to die.
