Nathaniel Philips was born in Manchester where he attended Manchester Grammar School. His father, John Leigh Philips, was a Manchester manufacturer and friend of Joseph Wright of Derby. Ambleside is a town in the Central Lake District and was a popular destination for both amateur and professional artists as landscape painting developed in the early 19th century. Philips settled in Liverpool and exhibited at the Liverpool Academy and the Royal Manchester Institution.
