Plain tall ceramic amphora. Almost straight neck, slight thickening around inverted rim; base round with relatively short spike; spike is dull reddish colour with small white shell/chalk inclusions. Remains of dark brown/black substance around the rim, particularly inside. Handles run from just below the rim almost to the base of the neck. Acquired for Sir Francis C. Danson by Professor John Garstang (Liverpool University Institute of Archaeology). A label attached to another jar from Dakka (1977.114.61) reads: "Purchased at Dakke. Amphora of Roman Period"; a temple site in Nubia, now under the waters of Lake Nasser. Diameter of mouth, 90 mm; length of spike, 60mm. CONDITION NOTE 1998: Small hole, pitted, surface dirt.
