Ariel

WAG 7217

Information

This is a sketch that was used for an illustration which featured in a Liverpool Autumn Exhibition catalogue. It depicts 'Ariel', a spirit from William Shakespeare's play 'The Tempest'. There is also an oil painting in the Walker Art Gallery collection (WAG 2821) entitled 'Ariel' by Fowler. This is probably a preparatory drawing for the oil composition. There is a similar composition by the German-born artist, Henry Fuseli (1741 - 1825) also entitled 'Ariel' and made between 1800 and 1810 (Folger Shakespeare Library). Fowler's perception of Ariel may have been inspired by Fuseli's painting as it features the same large bat seen in this composition.
