Ash Chest Lid

59.148.347b

Information

Gabled lid with bolsters and a Roman priest's hat in the pediment. The lid is represented in Blundell's 'Engravings' on top of the ash chest of Aurelius Ingenuus (59.148.347a). Davies commented that the lid was made or adapted for the ash chest at the time of Henry Blundell's purchase. The motif of the priest's hat (the galerus worn by the flamines) is very unusual indeed.
