This work is presumably a drawing made for the blockamker after the oil painting was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1893, and later at the Liverpool Autumn Exhibition in the same year.
Van Ruith was a prolific British-German painter whi was active in the late 19th century and early 20th century. His career as an artist took off in the 1880s when he worked in India and he later moved to London in 1892. He was a regular contributor to the Royal Academy. He predominantly made landscapes, portraits, and scenes from daily life.
