Autumn

WAG 2430

Information

See back of docket card for thorough information about the frame, as well as the provenance of the work. Sir Lawrence sold "Autumn" to Gambart. Wallis and Son, of the French Gallery in London from whom the Walker Art Gallery purchased "Autumn" in 1912, had acquired the work from the collection of Mr. Arthur Sanderson, of Edinburgh, who had had it in his collection for about 25 to 30 years. See the letters in the file of this work for more details. Sir Lawrence made another watercolour, titled "Autumn (Scene in a Roman Garden)," in 1879, and it is almost identical to the work above (WAG 2430) except for an inclusion of a Greek statue on a pedestal seen up to the knee in the upper centre, behind the exedra seat.
