Bag

A flat rectangular bag (kete muka) made from New Zealand flax, in dark brown and undyed fibre, with a short gray and yellow fringe halfway up the front and back, and coloured twining. There is a wide brown and undyed fringe around three sides, and two twisted fibre handles. This bag was made by finger-weaving or twining and the main technique is double-pair twining in double rows, which forms the wefts (aho). The twining began at the top edge with a selvedge, and finished at the bottom where the warp threads (whenu) form the bottom part of the fringe. There are three warps per cm, and the wefts are 14 mm apart. The fringe threads are joined by a line of single-pair twining and two are sewn onto the side edges at front and back. The weft threads are grey and brown, yellow and purple-dyed flax fibre. The grey and yellow fringe halfway up front and back is made from extra threads twined in vertically like tassels. The warps are twined into the wefts in pairs, and each pair separated between wefts.
