Aboriginal bark painting from Umbakumba in yellow brown and white. The bottom part of the painting depicts hunters in dug out canoes on either side of a turtle. The top part refers to the wet season and to the Macassan voyagers from Sulawesi (Indonesia) who visited the region for many years prior to 1917, when the Australian government stopped them. Umbakumba was set up by Fred Grey working with Groote Eylanders (Wanandilyakwa) and Yolngu from the mainland just after World War II. The paintings often carry themes that cut across from Groote to Blue Mud Bay. This painting is a wonderful example of the interrelationship between figuration and abstraction in the art of the region.
