This work appears to have been drawn for a blockmaker, for an illustrated catalogue of an exhibition, although the artist does not seem to have exhibited any works of this title. Van Ruith was a prolific British-German painter whi was active in the late 19th century and early 20th century. His career as an artist took off in the 1880s when he worked in India and he later moved to London in 1892. He was a regular contributor to the Royal Academy. He predominantly mae landscapes, portraits, and scenes from daily life.
