Information

Holland travelled extensively during his lifetime. He was commissioned by the proprietor of the periodical the 'Landscape Annual' to visit Portugal in 1837. He produced a series of drawings there to illustrate 'The Tourist in Portugal' by W H Harrison, the 'Landscape Annual' published in 1839. Holland arrived in Lisbon on June 1837 and stayed until early autumn that same year. An inscription on the work records that the view is of the entrance to 'Liad de Belems Hotel Cintra'. Mrs Belem kept hotels in Lisbon and nearby Sintra in Portugal as well as one in Seville in Spain.
