J. Benson worked as a clerk in the Warehousing Department of the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board (MDHB). The collection comprises material produced by the MDHB and other published material on the Port of Liverpool. Newspaper cuttings and notes, presumably by J. Benson, regarding the Port of Liverpool. These include newspaper articles and cuttings from 1930s - 1960s discussing Liverpool's role in the Transatlantic Slave Trade (D/BEN/3) and Benson's notes on the subject (D/BEN/2/8). The collection includes scenes of Liverpool from the 18th century removed from various unidentified sources (D/BEN/4/9). Images include views of Custom House, Town Hall, docks, Croxteth Hall, Knowsley Hall and other local stately homes, churches, also images of Dr Stewart and Rev John Ralph of Bethesda Chapel, Duncan Street, Liverpool. This collection was relisted in October 2007 and the MDHB staff magazines, Port of Liverpool Shipping Guides and the Port of Liverpool newspapers were transferred to the Library collection. The MDHB plans of the Port of Liverpool were transferred to the Plan Collection. Some duplicates were disposed of.
