Bolton Abbey

'Bolton Abbey' was one of the earliest designs for the 'Picturesque Views in England and Wales' print series. It shows the ruins of Bolton Abbey. The building had been abandonded in 1540 and left to fall into disrepair. It had become a popular sight on the tourist circuit by the late 18th century. This was influenced by William Wordsworth's (1770 - 1850) celebrated poems about the surrounding area, including 'The Force of Prayer' from 1815.
