Book of the Dead Fragments

1978.291.351

Information

Loose fragments of papyri with hieratic text. Studied by Dr Roland Enmarch (August 2016) who identified the two largest pieces as containing the main text of Book of the Dead Spell 100, an incantation for transfiguring the dead individual, making them into an 'excellent spirit'. Two large fragments (118 x 78 mm and 54 x 75 mm) and several smaller pieces. Some stuck to layers of black resin soaked linen, suggesting the papyrus was once next to a mummified body. There also seems to be some plant material - probably from a funerary garland. Context is so far unknown as the documentation has not been traced. CONDITION NOTE 1998: Discoloured.
