Bottle cooler
LL 1449
Information
A blue jasper bucket for cooling bottles at the dining table. It would have been packed with ice. The white jasper sprigging depicts classical style scenes of boy followers of Bacchus the Roman god of agriculture and wine. The border of vines around the rim and the border of icicles at the base give clues to the bucket's use.
The design of the sprigging is based on sketches by Lady Diana Beauclerk (1734-1808), ancestor of Diana, Princess of Wales. Lady Beauclerk was a lady of the bedchamber to Queen Charlotte. Wedgwood used her name, as a designer, to impress clients.
A pair with LL 1448.
