Information

Squat ovoid jar with pierced lug handles for suspension. Pale pink clay with decoration of spirals and wavy lines in red. The shape of this type of jar was derived from a stone prototype (for examples see 49.47.401 and 1977.112.143), and the starting point for the decoration was similarly an imitation of the mottled appearance of red breccia. When fired, the surface would become a suitably light-coloured background for the decoration which was applied before firing with a wash containing iron oxides which fired reddish-brown.
