Box; patch

LL 2300

Information

A patch box made of ivory, inlaid with a green and blue jasper plaque decorated with white jasper sprigging. The decorative sprigging depicts classical figures. The jasper plaque is edged in gold and the box has a gold trim and push button catch. Inside the box, there is a mirror in the lid and the base is lined with red velvet. Patches were used in the eighteenth century, by both men and women, to cover blemishes on the face. They became very fashionable with false beauty spots and decorative shapes, such as the moon and stars, being worn. Patches could have different meanings depending on what they represented and where they were placed on the face.
