Information

Silver-gilt radiate brooch, Continental type. The head has 5 double-lobed knobs decorated with flat garnets. There is Fan-wise grooving inside the contour frame. The bow is slightly expanding to the foot which has decoration with nielloed ring-and-dot ornament down the centre and chip-carved zig-zag down its sides. The base of the foot is chamfered off, decorated with punched dots. The back of the head plate is recessed. Wide apart there is pair of small pierced lobes supporting a cross-bar to which a long bronze pin was hinged by soldering. It has recently been observed that the hinged pin does not seem functional and may be a 19th-century 'repair'.
