Buckle

LL 2240

Information

A cut steel buckle with a blue jasper medallion, shown here in the centre of the image. The jasper medallion has white jasper sprigging which depicts Leopold 11 (1747-1792), Austrian Emperor . It is uncertain where the steel work was made but it bears some similarities with steel work produced at Tula in Russia. Wedgwood had an agent in Russia and Wedgwood's ceramics were very popular with Russian nobility. The item depicted at the top of the image is probably a clasp for a bag. Beneath the buckle a necklace of cut steel beads is depicted. Please see LL 2271 for more information on the necklace.
