Bust of a Satyr

Bust of a male, plausibly a satyr of an old age and represented in a slightly sunken mood that may not be that suitable for a satyr. He has pointed ears and there are small horns which are restorations. The hooded garment he is wearing is more difficult to interpret and was probably fashioned in the 18th century when the head was mounted on a modern bust. It is likely that the entire piece was remodelled in the 18th century. The original ancient piece could have been a colossal Dioskur and the cap would have been a feature of Dioskur, a hooded river god or a Phrygian wearing a cup. Bartman noted that it would have been easy to cut a new head out of the thick tresses of any of the above mentioned subjects.
