Sculptures and paintings of children became increasingly common in the realist art of 17th-century Holland, reflecting their greater importance in the family and in society. Here the subject is treated with a very touching tenderness, with a chubby face and a cap tied beneath her chin. The costume suggests a date of early 1630s.
