The 1995 film, Butterfly Kiss tells the story of Eunice and Miriam. Eunice is a bisexual serial killer who wanders the motorways of Lancashire looking for her lover Judith in service stations, often with violent consequences. Eunice comes to meet Miriam who soon leaves home and becomes Eunice’s lover. Eunice offers the unknowing Miriam to a trucker for sex, killing him as he rapes her. Later, Miriam kills a man she thinks to be raping Eunice, though the sex this time is completely consensual. The film and relationship between Eunice and Miriam come to a climactic and tragic conclusion on the sea shore, filmed in Formby, Merseyside. The film was written by Liverpool writer, Frank Cottrell-Boyce and was directed by Michael Winterbottom. It was entered into the Berlin International Film Festival in 1995.
