Buying the Tickets

Phillip, a Scottish painter, specialised in scenes of Spanish life. They showed off to great advantage his gifts as a colourist and his dashing technique, and earned him the nickname 'Phillip of Spain'. This oil sketch on paper is for a larger picture now in Dundee Art Gallery, one of a pair of lottery subjects which remained unfinished at Phillip's early death. James Orrock, from whom Lever bought the sketch, was a pupil of Phillip's intimate friend, Stewart Smith.
