Information

This watercolour is one of seven topographical continental views that are particularly small and framed together in the Lady Lever Art Gallery's collection. They were all catalogued by the art critic Robert Rattray Tatlock (1889-1954) as the work of John Skinner Prout (1806 - 1976), rather than his uncle Samuel Prout (1873 - 1852) to whom they had been previously attributed. It is now believed that these views are copies by an unknown artist from engravings published in the popular periodical 'Landscape Annuals' during the 1830s.
