Candlestick vase
LL 1520
Information
This is one of a pair of blue jasper candlesticks, decorated with white jasper sprigging. Sprigging is the name given to the process of forming decoration in a mould and then applying it to a ceramic item.
It is called a tripod candlestick vase. This is because the lid can be inverted so that the vase acts as a candlestick, as in the candlestick on the left of the photograph. If the lid is turned over, as in the candlestick on the right, it becomes a decorative urn.
The candlestick is one of a pair with LL 1519.
They would probably have been displayed on a mantlepiece above a fireplace.
