Information

Edward Linley Sambourne was an English cartoonist and illustrator who worked for the satirical magazine Punch for more than 40 years. He enrolled in the Chester Training College from 1857 to 1860 where he was encouraged to develop his talent for drawing. In 1860 he enrolled in the South Kensington School of Art but stayed only for a few months. Sambourne became a regular member of staff of Punch in 1871, and then its chief principal cartoonist, succeeding John Tenniel in 1901 after his long occupancy at the magazine. Inscribed 'ever yours, Sammy', this seems to have been from a note or letter.
